Rainy Day Date Ideas Other Than Netflix
Looking for the best rainy day date ideas? We’ve got you covered with lots of rainy day date ideas! Rain is not something we have very much experience with living in Southern California. We can usually plan to have outdoor date activities, like hiking and beach bike rides, all year around. This year, we’ve had more rain than we’ve ever experienced before. While it’s great for the environment and all the mountains around us have been super green, it’s also putting a cramp in our date day/night style.
We love a good Netflix binge and cuddles on the couch, but we are antsy for more, so we had to get creative with our rainy day date night ideas. We’ve come up with some fun rainy day date ideas and thought we’d share them with you! Here are some rainy day date ideas, whether you prefer staying in or braving the weather outside.
At home rainy day date ideas:
1. Have a wine and paint night
These have become pretty popular date ideas, but why not recreate the activity at home as a rainy day date? If you have fancy paints and canvases, great, if not, just get some cheapo kids paints and thick posterboard type paper. You can find tons of painting tutorials on YouTube of paintings you like. This is also an awesome way to have a budget friendly version of a typically pricey date. We always have a lot of fun with this rainy day date idea!
2. Compete in a cook off or join forces to create a fabulous meal
There’s something so romantic about cooking dinner together. I’m not sure if it’s the fact that you’re creating something together or that there are so many different tastes, smells, and textures to delight your senses. Whatever the reason, tackle a new recipe together. This is a great time to tackle a challenge or time intensive recipe that you don’t usually have time for. We made gnocchi together on our last rainy day!
If you’re looking something cozy on this rainy day, we love this roasted creamy tomato soup.
Feeling more competitive? Host your own cook off. Each of you gets the same ingredients and same amount of time to come up with your own tasty creation. You could also give each person a weird ingredient that they have to work into an appetizer, entree, and dessert.
3. Cozy up to an indoor picnic on your rainy day date
Why not take a picnic indoors? Set up a blanket and some pillows, even better if it’s by a fireplace! Pack up all your food in a picnic basket and laze away the day with your yummy food and cozy set up. This is a great time to play some card or board games, tell stories, play truth or dare, or whatever other creative idea you come up with on your rainy day date idea.
Picnic food ideas:
- Fried chicken sandwiches
- Cheese board
- Salads in mason jars
- Mini pizzas
4. Set up a scavenger hunt as a rainy day date idea
Scavenger hunts can be so fun! Each of you set up one for the other person by writing clues that lead to different locations. It’s even more fun if you add little missions to each location and also little gifts {just funny little items you’ve found around the house}.
This is a great rainy day date idea because it’ll take some time for each of you to set it up and then time for each of you to go through your scavenger hunt. It’ll keep you entertained for a long time! To make it more exciting you can also place a bet on who will finish their scavenger hunt the fastest!
5. Get crafty
Why not pull out all the art supplies you have {paint, stickers, colored paper} and get creative! If you have absolutely no idea what to make, you can look up ideas on Pinterest, but part of the fun is just creating something! Who cares if it looks like a Kindergarten project? You can also make this functional by making something you can actually use around the house like a pretty vase or tackling a DIY project around the house. We recently gave our fireplace a distressed antique look and it was so much fun!
Crafts for your rainy day date idea:
- Draw each others portraits
- Paint or paper mache an old ugly vase
- Decorate a plain white mug with sharpies
- Make scrapbooks for each other
- Create a vision board for your relationship
- Make a “thing I love about you” jar for each other
- Make a candle out of old crayons
- Create art out of old wine corks
6. Channel your competitive sides
Bust out your favorite games and have a game night on your rainy day date. We are partial to backgammon and gin rummy. We also find it fun to go for an old school classic from time to time. Up the ante with pre decided sexy bets! Want to make it even sexier? Any game can easily become a strip game. Strip monopoly? Why not!
Board game ideas:
- Codenames: Duet
- Cards Without Decency
- Conversation starter games
- Couples trivia games
- Adult board games
7. Stay in bed all day
A rainy day is the best excuse to stay in bed all day. Make sure you’ve got tons of pillows and blankets, bring in books, games, and food to bed and stay there alllll dayyyy! *sigh* such a cozy rainy day date idea! This would be a great time to order in food so that you don’t have to get out of bed for too long and make it yourself. Doesn’t this just sound like the perfect rainy day date idea? Now I’m wishing tomorrow was a rainy day so we could try this rainy day date idea!
8. Have a book club for two
Start a book together or read or listen to the same book. Once you’re done, discuss! If you’re stumped on what to talk about, you can Google book club discussion guides. Here are some book ideas. Here are also some book club guides we’ve put together. We also have a list of podcasts for couples to listen to together if reading is not really your thing.
9. Build a fort for your rainy day date
Standard childhood rainy day activity that’s SO much fun as an adult! Put your blankets, furniture, and pillows to good use and create the magical fort of your childhood dreams. Bonus points if you add twinkly lights. Serious bonus points if you play a make believe game like when you were a kid, but we won’t judge you if you just use your fort to take a nap. You can also pretend the electricity is out and light some candles to make it all romantic or use flashlights and tell spooky stories.

What to wear on your at home rainy day date:
The nice thing about choosing an at home rainy day date idea is that you don’t have to dress super warm since you won’t be outside! Plus your hair won’t get wet and frizzy. You’ll still want to keep it pretty comfy and subtly sexy since you’re at home. Here are some ideas:
- Leggings and a cozy sweater. This is the coziest of the outfit recommendations, but many sweaters can still be subtly sexy and let’s be real, guys love yoga pants. I love these sweaters: this one has a heart, this one has a cute criss cross back, this one is off shoulder
- Jeans and a cute sweater. Basic, but this combo works for a reason
- Maxi dress. Take advantage of being inside on this rainy day date and put on a maxi dress! Turn up the heater if it gets chilly or add a little cardigan. I love this one, this one, and this one
- Lounge pants and tank top. This look is so effortless, comfy, and still sexy as it’ll show off your curves
- A cute pajama set, add a cardigan for warmth. So many pretty and subtly sets, perfect for your rainy day date night. Love this classic one, this soft one, and this satin & lace one
Indoor rainy day date ideas if you want to get out of the house but stay indoors:
10. Go museum hopping
The perfect way to spend a day indoors! Pump yourself full of culture and creativity. You may be surprised how inspired you leave feeling. If you don’t have any museums nearby, do a quick Google search and see if there are any fun art galleries.
If you decide you don’t want to leave the house, most major museums offer an online collection that you can browse from the comfort of your own home! Here are a few of them:
- The British Museum in London
- The Louvre in Paris
- The Dali Theater and Museum in Spain
- The Vatican Museums in Vatican City
Make up a game to plan during your museum visit to make this rainy day date idea even more fun, like having to pick one piece of art from each section to put in your house or a drinking game, like every time you see flowers, take a sip of wine {this one will probably work best if you decide to do a virtual visit, try not to get kicked out of the museum 😆 }
11. Be kids again
There are so many fun indoor activities for kids, but who says they have to be for kids only? Here are some great ideas to channel your inner child while hiding indoors:
- Bowling – who cares if you’re not good, just put up the bumpers
- Ice skating or roller skating – this one is a good excuse to hold hands
- Arcade – we could spend hours having Pacman marathons!
- Laser tag – all the running around will get your blood and adrenaline pumping, which is perfect for boosting in love feelings!
- Go carts – silly dates are the best in our opinion!
12. Pretend you’re in Paris
Sitting in a café all day and lingering over cups of coffee or glasses of wine just feels so Parisian to me and like the ultimate rainy day date idea. Find the cutest café near you and go whisper sweet nothings to each other, people watch, and/or read a book. Want to actually plan a trip to Paris while you’re there? Check out our guide of everything you need to know when visiting Paris.
What to wear on your out of the house rainy day date:
You’ll want to wear something warm and cozy, but you don’t need to worry about getting TOO warm since you’ll still be indoors. If you have waterproof items like waterproof boots or a trench coat, that’ll be perfect in case you get wet from the car to wherever you are going. Here are some outfit ideas:
- Leggings, cozy sweater, and knee high boots
- Jeans, cute sweater, vest or trench coat, and knee high boots
- Sweater dress, tights, and knee high boots
This is my favorite brand for waterproof boots and booties. They don’t look like waterproof boots, they are SO cute and also so comfy.
Outdoor rainy day date ideas – getting wet is part of the adventure!
13. Go mud sliding for your rainy day date idea
Grab sleds {or trash can lids if you don’t have sleds!}, find a big hill, and let the rain be your very own slip and slide! It might get a bit messy, but it’ll be so much fun! Afterwards, take your dirty selves home and jump into a shower, stat! Maybe together…
14. Have a rainy swim
Why not go swimming in the rain for your rainy day date? You won’t get about getting wet from the rain since you’ll already be wet from the pool. If you don’t have your own pool, go to a community one, it’s sure to be empty on a rainy day! Plus, a rainy swim can be surprisingly romantic.
15. Splash in puddles as a rainy day date idea
A kid favorite, and why not channel your inner kid? Put on some cute rain boots and go find some big puddles to stomp in! You may be surprised just how much fun it can be!
16. Try your hand at rain photography
Rain photography can be very beautiful. Head out in the rain and find some magical water soaked streets, trees, flowers, and more to take photos of! Just make sure you have a raincoat for your camera or at least a plastic bag to keep it safe. You can turn this into a competition and see who can get the most unique photo or you can create a list of photos to take, like a photo scavanger hunt. Come back home and keep the rainy day date going by looking over all your photos and figuring out a way to put them to use. Maybe you can create a scrapbook or print one out to frame!
A few rain photography tips:
- Hang out under a dry spot, like an awning or a porch, as you click away
- Shoot from inside a {parked} car. This will keep you relatively dry as you take some great rain shots
- Incorporate your umbrella into your photo. This can make for a great framing effect
- Utilize reflections. This will help capture the essence of the rainy day
- Find a light source and shoot towards it. Light will help make the rain more visible, especially if it’s dark and gloomy outside
- If you want to be in the photos together, check out this guide to taking photos together for couples
17. Dance and sing in the rain for a cute and romantic rainy day date
They made a movie out of it for a reason. Grab a cute umbrella, put on a pair of colorful rainboots, and you’re good to go star in your own musical comedy. Just play whatever music you choose from your phone {tip: keep your phone in a plastic bag so it doesn’t get wet!} Twirl around a lamppost {or even just around the street}, skip, dance, sing, and feel how good it feels to be free in the rain! #allwetdontcare. If that all sounds like too much effort, just stay home and watch the movie!
Some fun song ideas:
- It’s My Life – Bon Jovi {always my favorite karaoke song}
- Whatever “your song” is {our is All of Me}
- Umbrella – Rihanna
- Singing in the Rain – Gene Kelly
- Set Fire to the Rain – Adele
- It’s Raining Men – The Weather Girls
Romantic hint: if you don’t have a song, this can be your way to establish one! If you already do have a couples song, this can be just a silly inside joke one!
What to wear on your outdoors rainy day date:
Since you’re most likely going to be getting wet, you’ll want to wear something that that’s waterproof. You may also want to bring a change of clothes with you so that you’re not hanging around in wet clothes for too long. If you’re doing one of the messier date ideas like mud sliding, you’ll want to wear something you don’t mind getting dirty. This outfit probably won’t be the cutest one of all and your hair might get messed up, but just embrace it. The point of these outdoor dates is to have fun and spontaneity adds to the fun! I’d suggest doing a cute rain slicker, leggings, and heavy duty waterproof boots.
