If you missed it, here’s why I’m writing A Year of Delights

A Year of Delights Day 5 – Dreaming in the Garden

Zayn happened to take his nap while Bassam and I were enjoying a leisurely Sunday breakfast. It’s rare lately that we get any alone time or not have a million things we need to get done during that time.

We’re feeling the strain of not having that time together, so enjoying a yummy Sunday brunch in our backyard felt like such a true delight.

After finishing our delicious shakshukas, we wandering around the backyard. (Thank you Zayn for blessing us with an uncharacteristically long nap!)

We admired the fruits of Bassam’s labor. Fragrant roses, lemons and limes galore, and a most impressively, a sprouting pomegranate! Bassam has been working hard on healing and even improving our backyard since the big fire. His efforts are really showing.

We dreamed about what else we’d like to do. Maybe add a few planters of different lettuces and our favorite veggies. We dreamed of Zayn one day running out in the backyard and picking some herbs to be used for dinner. Maybe even picking some lettuce and eating it straight off the plant just like a little bunny.

We thought about where we could possibly add a little swing for him. What we could move around and reconfigure to make some space.

All that dreaming was such a delight. It doesn’t feel like a faraway fantasy. Zayn is here. We are so in love with him. Our backyard is flourishing.

Everything we’ve wanted is slowly coming to life. Can we take a second to delight in that, rather than let it pass us by with the stress of the daily grind.

This led to deeper discussions. What are our family priorities? What do we want our days to look like? Who takes charge of what? How do we balance it all?

It’s been hard to have good discussions on these heavy topics lately. We’re just so stressed and so tired. Truthfully, we haven’t been leaving the best of ourselves for each other.

But when the conversation had less pressure, it was just dreaming and fantasizing and not necessarily something we needed to solve, it flowed better.

We found we are in agreement and what we want is possible, if we just allow ourselves to dream.

And what delight there is to be found in the dreaming.
