Close your eyes and imagine the following. {Well, read this post and then close your eyes, haha}
You’re curled up on a comfy couch with a cozy blanket, sipping a cup of tea or glass of wine with a cracking fireplace. There’s nothing on your agenda all afternoon but losing yourself in a good book. You can hear the leaves rustling outside and there’s a pot of a deliciously scented cinnamon concoction floating through the room. It’s all just so cozy and so deliciously fall. Doesn’t that just sound dreamy?
I may not be able to help you clear your schedule for the afternoon, but I can help you create a delicious scent to waft through the house and smell like fall.
This is a super easy DIY simmering air freshener that will make your house feel so FALL. I love scented candles, but sometimes it feels good to just go natural. If you’re not a fan of artificial scents, this will be right up your alley. I’m going to share with you what I used in my potpourri simmering pot, but feel free to mix it up and get creative with what you use. There’s really no right or wrong with this, just think of which scents you typically like and will go well together.
Easy DIY Potpourri Simmer Pot Recipe to Make Your Home Smell Like Fall
Some tips:
- Save orange, tangerine, and apple peels in preparation for this!
- Stock up on cloves and cinnamon around the holidays when they go on sale
- Do this in a slow cooker if you’d like so that you can leave it on 24/7 without turning it off
- You can also do this in a stainless steel tea kettle
- Another variation: do it in a pan in an oven
- This is a great way to use up old ingredients that aren’t fresh enough to eat anymore
- Throw your favorite combinations into treat bags to give away as easy gifts
How To:
- Fill a small pot {or slow cooker or tea kettle} with water
- After it boils, turn it down to a simmer and include your ingredients
- Here are the ingredients I use:
- Tangerine peels {I don’t eat oranges, so I never have orange peels on hand}
- Cloves
- Cinnamon sticks {You can also do ground cinnamon}
- Vanilla extract
- Pumpkin pie spice {Very optional}
- Refill the water as needed, usually around every 3o minutes. You may need to turn it up to a boil very briefly when refilling the water. Don’t go for too long or the peels may burn and that’s not a very pleasant smell
- Simmer for as long as you like! You can keep it going for up to a week before needing to replace the ingredients. Don’t forget to turn it off when you leave the house!
- Get cozy and enjoy!
Other ingredients you can include:
- Apple juice instead of water
- Apple peels instead of orange
- Cranberries
- Almond extract
- Your favorite essential oils
- Dried peels instead of fresh peels
- Pine needles
- Nutmeg
- Star anise
- Cardamom pods
- Dried fruit
- Coffee beans
