If you missed it, here’s why I’m writing A Year of Delights

A Year of Delights Day 6 – How Good It Is To Be Understood

I borrowed a random audio book from the library the other day, not even sure how I came across it. The loan was about to end when I finally gave it a try. I’m so glad I did.

To Have and To Hold is written by a clinical psychologist about navigating the complex terrain of motherhood. There’s so much that no one really articulates to you about the experience and maybe because it’s so very difficult to articulate.

I find myself often feeling alone with the complexity of my feelings during this stage of life. While Bassam tries so very hard, my experience is just so different than his. When he just doesn’t get how I feel, it leaves me feeling so much more alone and like I’m a bit strange. Am I the only one who feels these ways?

Apparently not. As I listened to the book, I found myself nodding along to everything the author spoke about. I could relate to the challenges and feelings she described. Not only was it delightful to realize so many of us feel this way, it was also delightful to gain a little more perspective into why.

As I navigate my journey of motherhood, I know that I’ll have so many ups and downs. It’s all part of this transformative experience. As I hold space for other moms navigating it and learn how to hold space for myself, I’ll remember this, how good it is to feel understood.
