I’ve always thought that the way the sky looks during a sunset is how our souls must look like we are doing something we feel passionate about; colorful, fiery, and alive. One of my favorite things about blogging and Instagram is the outlet it provides for expression and creativity. I have always loved to create. As a young child, I would fill up notebooks and notebooks with endless stories, my observations about the world, or just random thoughts. I always thought I wanted to be a journalist, writer, or magazine editor when I grew up. My parents did not think this was a great idea and encouraged me to pursue my more practical passion: psychology. While I love my job and having the opportunity to help others, I feel most alive when I am given a moment without rules, without pressure, just to create.
I always thought that creativity didn’t really matter to Bassam, but when we were planning our wedding I learned he is actually very creative. He got into all the DIY projects I wanted to do and he expanded upon so many of my ideas and made them better. When we decided to start this blog, he got really into photography. He invested in our first DSLR (highly recommend this one for beginners, by the way!) and loved spending hours exploring a new city and shooting. Photography was never something I was very interested by, but I became into it too and loved exploring a city by paying attention to all the details. I would spot something that caught my attention and ask Bassam to shoot it, trying to explain to him the angle I wanted to see. I never took the photos myself because I didn’t trust myself to take it well. Either my shots would be blurry or crooked or a million other imperfections. When I went to Paris with my sister a few months ago, I was forced to shoot the photos myself since Bassam wasn’t with me. I discovered that I actually really loved photography and I could take a few non-blurry, non-crooked shots. Here’s a sample:
It’s always amazing to me how our creativity can evolve and our passions can change. While I will always love writing more than photography, it’s slowly becoming another creative outlet of mine and I love watching Bassam do something he’s passionate about. So what does all this have to do with today’s Instagram post? Well, while we were at the beach the other day and shot this picture and this picture, we were so enamored by the sky we wanted to try to shoot it in different angles. The end result wasn’t amazing, but we shared it on IG anyway because it represents our new creative outlet and passion. No one can be perfect at everything, especially not right away. Keeping that in mind, we are trying to be kinder to ourselves when it comes to our very beginner skills in photography and photo editing. The skill will come one day. In the meantime, we are having so much fun! Just please excuse my sometimes crooked photos and the lack of consistency with our photo editing. 😉
