It’s the most wonderful time of the year and also the most stressful time of the year. With all the presents you need to buy and wrap, food that you need to prepare, and relatives that you need to visit, it can be easy to lose sight of all the fun things that you can only do this time of year. Don’t forget to take some time to clear your head, have some fun, and create lasting memories. Here are 10 things you have to do this holiday season.
1. Buy a beautiful and comfortable coat
It can be tempting on super cold mornings to throw on your comfiest sweats and call it a fashion statement. That might be fine every once in a while, but you can’t be schlumpy all winter long. Invest in a super warm, beautiful, and comfortable coat. Pick something that you can throw on over anything and look instantly put together. By the way, this tip is for guys too!
2. Take a walk in a winter wonderland
Chances are you’re feeling a little frazzled with all that you have going on this time of the year. Take some time for yourself and go for a walk. Scenery is beautiful this time of the year, whether you live in an area that snows or not. Go in the late afternoon that way you can watch the evening light begin to set in and get to check out all the pretty sparkly Christmas lights. Listen to some holiday music if you’re into that or get a break from all the holiday tunes.
3. Start an annual tradition
The holiday season is a perfect time to do something special with your family, friends, or significant other. Think of a fun and silly or a meaningful tradition that you will look forward to doing together and start doing it every year.
4. Snuggle in front of a fire
There’s nothing cozier and more inviting than a blazing fire in the living room. Take advantage of the colder weather and snuggle in front of a fire almost every night. No matter what you’re doing- watching holiday movies, catching up on work, or wrapping presents, it’ll make everything feel a little more fun and relaxing. We don’t have a real fire place, but we bought a fake one that we turn on every day along with some candles. Our place just feels so cozy!
5. Show some love
This is the perfect time of the year to tell the people in your life how much you love and appreciate them. There are many things that you can delete from your list, but skimping on holiday cards should not be one of them. Buy a huge value pack of holiday cards and spend an afternoon writing a card for almost everyone in your life to tell them why you appreciate them. It might be fun to make yourself a special holiday drink to keep yourself refreshed while you write. Spiced apple cider, peppermint hot chocolate, eggnog, there are tons of yummy drink options around this time of year!
6. Create a killer recipe
Yes I know the holiday season is already full of tons of yummy food and you’re probably thinking it doesn’t need any more. But that’s why this is the perfect time of the year to come up with a killer recipe- something that you can pass down in your family for generations tocome. Next time you’re baking cookies for a holiday cookie exchange try experimenting with different ingredients and try to come up with your own unique recipe. If you’d rather not eat any more sweets can also devise a super yummy and healthy dish to take with you to holiday parties that you *know* won’t have any healthy options.
7. Star in your own romantic comedy
Have you ever noticed how many romantic movies are set during the holiday season? It’s no surprise when you think of all the romantic options of things to do there are during the winter. Take advantage and don’t forget to sprinkle some romance throughout the season. Kiss under the mistletoe, snuggle by the fire, go ice-skating, take a drive to look at Christmas lights, the options are almost endless.
8. Learn about someone else’s holiday traditions
A perfect way to get closer to a friend is to learn about their holiday traditions. Learning new things and being exposed to novel experiences is also great for you and will get you feeling inspiring and having new ideas. If you have a friend who celebrates a holiday other than yours ask if you could join in on a few festivities. Learn what games they play, foods they make, and the stories behind their traditions.
9. Write a letter to yourself
As the year draws to an end, take some time to think about how it’s been. Think about what you’ve learned, what you’ve accomplished, and how you’ve grown. Something we love to do is write a letter to our future selves of all the things that we want to remember and all the things that we hope to accomplish. You can do this is too at Future Me. Let them know when you want to read your letter and they will email it to you on that day! Really cool concept.
10. Don’t forget the basics!
Making gingerbread houses, going sledding, having snow ball fights, decorating your house…there are lots of basic holiday activities. Pick a few of your favorites and try to schedule them into your week! It’ll be nice to have something fun to look forward to each week and they will get you in a festive state of mind!
